The place
Amidst the misty peaks of the Virunga Mountains, Volcanoes National Park shelters the last mountain gorillas. Trek through lush emerald forests to witness these gentle giants in their wild sanctuary—a profound, heart-stirring encounter that echoes with the fragile beauty of life on the brink.
The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and sulfur, a primal perfume that clings to your skin. Beneath your feet, the ground feels alive—a soft, yielding carpet of black volcanic soil and moss that seems to breathe with the mountain. You are walking through Volcanoes National Park, a realm where the earth’s fiery heart still beats close to the surface.
As you ascend the mist-wrapped trails, the crunch of cinders underfoot gives way to the haunting silence of high-altitude forests. Then, you hear it—the distant, guttural crackle of lava meeting the sea, a sound like the world being remade. Peering over the crater’s edge at Halemaʻumaʻu, you witness the glow of molten rock, an otherworldly orange that pulses in the steam-filled dark, casting long, dancing shadows.
This is Pele’s domain, a place of creation and destruction woven into legend. Every step tells a story: of eruptions that built these slopes, of rainforests that reclaimed the stone, and of the resilient life that thrives in the volcano’s shadow. Here, you don’t just see nature—you feel its raw, untamed power, humbled by the force that shapes the very ground beneath you.
